The Department of Education has very strict guidelines to monitor subject changes in the Further Education and Training Phase (FET). In Grade 10, you are able to chose your subjects. Sometimes the student does not cope with the new work load and requires a subject change. Below are the prerequisites for a student to change a subject:
1. You may only make 1 subject change decision through out the whole FET phase (grade 10 to grade 12)
2. During this decision to change, you may make 1 or 2 subject changes.
3. You may change to a practical subject such as Consumer Studies, IT, CAT, EGD or Visual Art.
4. Prior to the acceptance of a subject change for IT, CAT or EGD, an entrance-exam and a 50% pass is required.
Example 1:
A student in grade 10 decides to change Business Studies for Geography. The student will take Geography the following year in grade 11. The change is registered with the DOE which links the subject choice to the student's ID number. The system will not allow another change. Edenvale High School does not have the authority to adjust the subjects at will.
Example 2:
A student in grade 11 decides to change from Mathematics CORE to Mathematical LITERACY. When the student applies for the subject change the DOE system detects that the student has already made a change in grade 10. The year before the student decided to change Physical Science to Geography. This means that the student is unable to change from CORE to LITERACY and therefore must continue in Mathematics CORE till the end of grade 12.
Please read over the examples and understand the consequences of changing your subject. Often students will change only one subject and then realize they should have changed a second one as well. An example of this is when a student will change Physical Science but not change Mathematics CORE. This results in the student needing to continue with subjects that they are failing and there is nothing Edenvale High School can do to change the subject once 1 subject change decision has been made.
