There is a huge demand for artisans in South Africa. The engineering sector requires that at least 30 000 new artisans are trained each year. In reality little more than 10 000 artisans are trained. There is a large capacity at all training colleges yet this vital resource is not being taken advantage of by school leavers. Many believe that artisans are under paid yet an instrument technician has an average annual salary of R329 000 (R25 300 p/m)*. Do not think your chances of finding a good job ends if you are rejected at the universities, there are many different choices to make.
